História
Historicamente, falar de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo implica remontar muitos séculos na história. Desde a Pré – História até ao séc. XX, muitos são os testemunhos existentes, permitindo-nos viajar pelo tempo à descoberta das raízes históricas de toda uma região.
Entranhado no coração da região do Riba Côa, o concelho de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, instituído por decreto de 25 de Julho de 1836, apresenta grande riqueza de património edificado, onde assume papel de destaque Castelo Rodrigo, uma das mais belas e marcantes Aldeias Históricas de Portugal. Mas em todas as freguesias encontramos monumentos de grande valor que guardam segredos e memórias de tempos passados.
IDADE DO BRONZE
Armas e ornamentos da Idade do Bronze
A zona de Riba Côa, apartada no isolamento das suas pobres montanhas, manteve o arcaísmo da sua civilização. O surgimento de armas de bronze e estelas de chefes “heróis”,característicos nesta zona, confirmam a formação paulatina de uma sociedade de guerreiros pastores.
A estátua-menir de” Ataúdes” descoberta a cerca de 2,7 km para Este de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, remonta a esse período da história de que existem poucos testemunhos.
O imponente monumento mede 2,96 metros de altura e 0,79 m de largura, apresentando dois motivos principais e centrais: uma figura humana e uma espada.
Trata-se de uma estátua armada, portanto uma insígnia estandardizada de poder. É a espada o único elemento que, objectivamente, nos possibilita uma aproximação à cronologia do monumento.
A arma representada remeterá para um momento avançado do bronze antigo, finais do 2.º quartel do II milénio a. C.
Vigorou nestas terras uma sociedade chefiada por uma elite guerreira, consequência da hierarquização que era exigida para defesa das terras e gados, o controlo de vias e zonas de pasto. No séc. VI a.C., a principal invasão celta alterou o quadro geopolítico da nossa região. Castelo Rodrigo, pela sua inserção numa elevação, à semelhança de muitas vilas e cidades da região, faz-nos remontar a um povoamento de tipo castrejo, o que alguns restos arqueológicos vêm comprovar. Tratava-se sem dúvida de castros Vetões, os primeiros povoadores de quem existem vestígios.
Este povo pré-romano habitou uma zona que ia desde o rio Tormes até ao norte de Cáceres e desde Ávila até ao rio Côa. Eram fundamentalmente criadores de gado e por esse facto, procuravam para a instalação das aldeias, lugares e zonas montanhosas, onde abundassem pastos para os rebanhos.
As características do concelho de Figueira adequavam-se perfeitamente às exigências de vida deste povo que buscava defesas naturais para a implantação dos seus povoados, que construíam em zonas escarpadas ou em zonas flanqueadas por rios profundos.
Este é o povo autor de numerosas esculturas em granito, os “Berrões“. Estas esculturas,colocadas nos limites das povoações, eram erigidos como manifestação de culto aos animais que constituíam a base da economia. Em Santo André, no limite da freguesia de Almofala, temos duas magníficas peças que remontam a este período.
Encontram-se ruínas de tipo castrejo em Castelo Rodrigo, Serra de Nave Redonda e Serra de Monforte. Nestas civilizações, a pedra assumia particular importância, nomeadamente na construção, mediante o emprego de um aparelho grosseiro.

A PRESENÇA DOS ROMANOS EM RIBA CÔA
Os Romanos começaram a conquista da Península a partir do ano 218 a. C., entrando em contacto com os povos que habitavam esta região 25 anos mais tarde. Posteriormente, enquanto parte da Península estava a adaptar-se à civilização romana, este mundo estranho ergueu barreiras contra a romanização e só depois de século e meio de lutas ferozes, os povos desta região foram definitivamente submetidos. Foi sob o comando de Júlio César, então Pretor da Lusitânia, por volta do ano 61 a. C., que os romanos puseram fim aos periódicos levantamentos de Lusitanos e Vetões.
Os Lusitanos, que eram o povo vizinho pelo oeste, estendiam-se desde o rio Côa até ao mar, com o Douro a estabelecer o limite da fronteira norte. As suas relações com os Vetões eram estreitas, de tal modo que se formavam grupos de salteadores entre os membros dos dois povos, que marchavam para outras regiões da península, para pilhar onde tivessem oportunidade. A chegada dos romanos à Península Ibérica trouxe uma forma diversa de encarar os povos submetidos. A ocupação romana distinguiu-se da efectuada por outros povos invasores, devido ao carácter social e administrativo que instalaram e desenvolveram ao longo dos séculos. A introdução da língua latina, dos deuses romanos que aos poucos substituem as divindades locais, da organização administrativa do território, a abertura de estradas, a construção de pontes e templos, foram factores que alteraram o “ modus vivendis” dos povos peninsulares.
A romanização manifestou-se em todo o território, como provam os vestígios arqueológicos, pois no sopé de muitas colinas, surgiram as Villae e os templos, sendo famoso a torre de Almofala, que apesar das várias alterações, conserva ainda o magnífico pódio romano e tem revelado importante espólio, que permite trazer alguma luz a uma época que foi importante para o definitivo desenvolvimento civilizacional desta região.

A presença dos romanos no concelho de Figueira, está assinalado no Casarão da Torre em Almofala, nalgumas “ Villae” e em Aras votivas. De entre estas destaca-se a Ara Votiva do Casarão da Torre, descoberta nas escavações feitas junto à torre de Almofala. A Ara apresenta a inscrição “ CIVITAS COBELCORVM “. Pode entender-se como uma referência à capital dos Cobelcos, um povo de que não havia referência. O Achado leva a supor que terá existido no local, uma povoação de certa importância.

Esta descoberta, segundo a investigadora Dr.ª Helena Frade, poderá revolucionar a história local e até nacional, pois deixa antever a possibilidade de ali ter existido a cidade dos Cobelcos, desconhecida até ao presente e que altera o mapa de distribuição das cidades conhecidas no período da ocupação romana da Península Ibérica.
SUEVOS E VISIGODOS EM RIBA CÔA
A península Ibérica, num fenómeno que abrangeu todo o império romano sofreu a invasão de hordas de povos bárbaros: Alanos, Vândalos e Suevos.
Os Suevos, depressa constituíram um forte estado que durou sensivelmente entre o ano de 411 a 585., tendo constituído capital em Bracara Augusta (Braga). Este povo implantou-se na região entre Douro e Minho. Converteram-se ao Cristianismo em 456, no tempo de Richiário.
Posteriormente, chegaram os Visigodos, que rapidamente conquistam Alanos e Vândalos.
Durante dois séculos esta região é influenciada pela luta entre estes dois reinos, pois os visigodos haviam-se convertido ao arianismo, o que deu aos suevos um espírito de cruzada contra estes últimos. Foi o rei Visigodo Leovigildo (577-586) que submeteu definitivamente os suevos em 586. O seu sucessor Recaredo I (586-601) converteu-se ao catolicismo no 3.º concílio de Toledo.
Os visigodos mais avançados no sistema jurídico e social, recebem a influência do direito romano e a inspiração dos valores católicos da vida social dos suevos, constituindo o Codex Visigotorum, que regeu e influenciou a vida das populações mesmo após a conquista dos muçulmanos.
É dentro deste contexto de reorganização do Reino visigótico, que existem referências ao Riba Côa, através da diocese de Caliábria. Sabemos que era a localidade mais importante, contudo, a data da fundação é incerta. Supõe-se que a passagem a diocese terá ocorrido durante o reinado de Suitila (612-631), pois o primeiro bispo de Caliábria aparece a assinar as actas do 4.º concílio de Toledo, em 633, onde assina“ Servus Dei, episcopos callabriensis”.
A criação de Caliábria impunha-se, segundo M. Gonçalves da Costa ”… não existindo outra sede em espaço tão dilatado, como era de Viseu a Salamanca e Egitânia e aumentando a conversão dos povos, tornava-se extremamente molesto a visitação que os bispos eram obrigados a fazer. Foi pois natural que os Visigodos católicos resolvessem colocar outro bispo em Caliábria…”.
D. Mateo Hernandez Vegas, in Ciudade Rodrigo, la catedral y la ciudad Salamanca (1935), indica que a decadência de Civitas Augusta (Ciudad Rodrigo) exigiu a criação do bispado de Caliábria “… é certo e bem comprovado que a sede da arruinada Civitas Augusta foi transladada para Caliábria, cidade situada na foz do Côa no Douro…”.
A decadência de Caliábria está directamente ligada à da própria monarquia visigótica, que atingiu o seu ponto alto na viragem do séc. VII para o VIII, em razão das disputas pela coroa.
A morte do rei Vitiza e a sua sucessão por um filho não é aceite por um grupo de nobres que entregam a coroa a Rodrigo. A isso se opõem dois homens: D. Julião, governador de Ceuta e D. Opas, arcebispo de Hispalis (Sevilha) tio e tutor dos herdeiros afastados. O governador de Ceuta estabelece aliança com Muça, sarraceno e chefe das forças do norte de Africa. As tropas de D. Julião e Muça vencem Rodrigo no ano de 711 na batalha de Guadalete.
Desde esse momento, apenas no séc. XII, altura do nascimento de Portugal, voltou a falar-se de Caliábria. Quatro séculos depois, Caliábria ainda seria uma cidade de algum significado, pois foi dom de D. Fernando à Diocese de Ciudad Rodrigo.

ÁRABES
A invasão dos muçulmanos e a desintegração política e religiosa, incidiu directamente sobre o Riba Côa. Esta invasão fez ruir por completo a organização política do estado Visigótico, transtornando também a comunicação entre as cidades e o campo.
Nos primeiros anos da invasão, os colonos berberes instalaram-se em toda a zona do Douro.
No concelho de Figueira, existem vestígios da sua presença quer pela tradição oral (muitas são as lendas sobre mouras, fontes e sepulturas antropomórficas), quer pela marca deixada na toponímia, como podemos verificar nos nomes de Almofala e Algodres. Mas são ainda mais significativas as inscrições árabes sobre o lintel de uma porta na Aldeia Histórica de Castelo Rodrigo.

RECONQUISTA CRISTÃ
Na idade média e num fenómeno que se mantinha desde longo tempo, a insegurança permanente parece ter funcionado como óbice para atrair e fixar gente, o que indica que estas terras permaneceram à margem dos fenómenos de recuperação demográfica e ordenação feudal que estava a ocorrer em zonas próximas.
A situação começou a alterar-se desde meados do século XII, altura em que o monarca Leonês Fernando II, tomou no ano de 1161, a decisão de levar a cabo o repovoamento da zona de Riba Côa. Poucos anos depois, em 1189, Afonso IX de Leão, fixou os limites do concelho de Castelo Rodrigo, o primeiro a ser criado em terras do Riba Côa, tendo posteriormente, em 1209, atribuído à vila o foral.
O início do repovoamento, dado tratar-se de uma decisão política, não só preparava as bases para a futura colonização em massa, mas também ordenava a hierarquia do território e das populações, dentro dos marcos feudais do reino Leonês, o que provocou imediatas reacções militares, do lado português, com o objectivo de impedir essa fixação.
A tentativa portuguesa de impedir uma fixação Leonesa radica na importância estratégica de que se revestia Castelo Rodrigo, de onde poderiam ser arremetidas sortidas contra o território português.
Deste modo, uma sociedade de fronteira, bastante desarticulada e sem nenhum controlo durante vários séculos, em poucas décadas havia-se convertido numa sociedade enraizada na fronteira.
Quando o rei lavrador sobe ao trono português, a situação militar do Riba Côa era clara, pois não obstante as incursões dos seus antecessores, que fizeram passar de mão alguns castelos, toda a região era Leonesa.
D. Dinis pretendeu alterar esta situação e, aproveitando uma fraqueza dinástica de Leão, desloca-se à Guarda e dali declara guerra a Fernando IV, menor, filho de Sancho IV, que tinha por tutor D. Henrique. O rei português inicia uma profunda penetração por Castela, avançando com êxito sobre Ciudad Rodrigo, passa a Salamanca e chega a Valladolid, regressando a Portugal para se apossar da Região de Riba Côa, tendo colocado guarnições portuguesas em Castelo Rodrigo, Alfaiates, Sabugal, Vilar Maior, Castelo Bom, Almeida e Castelo Melhor. Desta forma obriga os Castelhanos a assinar o tratado de Alcanizes em 12 de Setembro de 1297. Com este tratado, o nosso monarca, desiste das pretensões
sobre Limia e Toronho e as terras de Aliste, mas exige o território que ocupara, passando a fronteira para o rio Águeda.
Este tratado teve consequências para as terras do Riba Côa, pois estas nunca mais voltaram a estar integradas nos domínios da coroa de Castela, com excepção para o período da união dinástica entre 1580 e 1640.
Desde aquela data as gentes deste concelho, apesar de longe da capital do reino, mantiveram sempre erguidas as cores da bandeira, que defenderam com denodo, sem olharem a esforços, intervindo em variadas acções militares que permitiram consolidar na população o seu forte sentir nacional e patriotismo.
Portal do Castelo, em ruínas
A fortaleza de Castelo Rodrigo desempenhou sempre papel de destaque entre os redutos da região e foi motivo de preocupação de sucessivas gerações de monarcas. No tocante à estrutura da fortificação, existem documentos que nos permitem conhecer as medidas que levaram a cabo reis, ordens militares, senhores e os habitantes do concelho.
Assim, D. Dinis, para melhor assegurar a posse das terras conquistadas aos reinos de Leão e Castela, mandou reparar as muralhas em volta da vila, guarnecendo fortemente a vila, o mesmo fazendo a todas as praças da fronteira Este.
Uns anos mais tarde, em 1369, D. Fernando I, na tenaz luta que empreende contra Castela, alegando direito ao trono por morte de D. Pedro I, mandou reparar as muralhas, que foram palco de escaramuças constantes, que se prolongaram até à guerra da Independência, mas como nem sempre os recontros foram favoráveis ás forças portuguesas, a vila sofreu grande sangria na população e o castelo foi caindo em ruínas.
Mais tarde, D. Manuel fê-lo reconstruir em finais da primeira década, dando-lhe foral em Santarém, datado de 25 de Julho de 1509.
Foi precisamente neste século, que os nossos castelos começaram a ser adaptados às armas de fogo com a construção de troeiras e aumento da profundidade das linhas de fogo, através da construção de barbacãs .
O "... Livro das Fortalezas...", de Duarte d'Armas, dá-nos indicações sobre a estrutura física da maior parte dos castelos situados na zona do Riba Côa, pois dos castelos compreendidos no tratado de Alcanizes, encontram-se representados nessa obra, os castelos de Castelo Rodrigo, Almeida, Castelo Bom, Vila Maior e Sabugal, não estando representados nesta zona da Beira, Castelo Melhor, Monforte e Alfaiates.
No desenho do códice de Madrid, lê-se «esta he hua gram ladeira de sobir» o que nos leva a lembrar que as características fronteiriças de Castelo Rodrigo, que o conde da Ericeira descreve como alcantilado e fragosa, eram benéficas para a defesa, aliado à própria fortificação que , apesar da escassa guarnição fazia parte dos castelos de 1ª linha.

BATALHA DE CASTELO RODRIGO
Muitos foram os momentos da história portuguesa onde o nome de Castelo Rodrigo foi elevado bem alto pela coragem dos seus habitantes, mas provavelmente o momento mais marcante foi a vitória conseguida a 7 de Julho de 1664 .
No século XVII, na Guerra da Restauração, Castelo Rodrigo escreveu a mais bonita página da sua história. Castelo Rodrigo, mantinha-se como fortificação activa, pertencendo à comarca judicial de Pinhel e ao bispado de Lamego, integrando o número de vilas com assento nas cortes, onde em 1642 ocupava o 11ºbanco. Os seus habitantes prezavam a sua situação como
centro da região. Além disso, a vila tinha voz activa quanto à organização dos governos de armas da Beira, coincidindo com Castelo Branco no pedido feito em cortes, em 1646, para que o governo da Beira fosse dividido em dois, para maior eficácia na defesa.
O monarca D. João IV vai então ordenar a divisão da Beira por dois governadores de armas, acreditando que assim ficaria melhor defendida, pois permitia um melhor racionamento das tropas, ao encurtar as zonas de acção numa província tão dilatada.
Assim, o governo das armas das comarcas da Guarda, Pinhel, Lamego e Esgueira é confiado a D. Rodrigo de Castro, então governador da cavalaria do exército do Alentejo, ao passo que Castelo Branco, Viseu e Coimbra ficaram ás ordens de D. Sancho Manuel.
O primeiro comando designava-se por Partido de Almeidae o segundo por Partido de Penamacor.Procurando testar o governador do partido de Almeida, os castelhanos tomam-lhe o pulso, atacando a região de Alfaiates. D. Rodrigo responde, e põe debaixo de ataques S. Felices de los Galegos e destruíu a «campanha» em redor de Ciudad Rodrigo.
Os dois chefes portugueses chegam a planear um ataque conjunto a Alcântara. Em 1651, os castelhanos avançam por Castelo Rodrigo e Sabugal, a que D. Rodrigo de Castro responde, atacando a região de Ciudad Rodrigo e de Salamanca.
Para termos uma ideia clara da importância de Castelo Rodrigo, convém avaliar as várias peças de armas dos dois reinos. Tal como se passava no plano de defesa Português, também a coroa espanhola, ponderava as necessidades e prioridade das suas praças de armas, junto à fronteira de Portugal, onde se destacava Ciudad Rodrigo.
A importância desta praça é bem visível no facto de ter justificado a nomeação, para o seu comando, do duque de Alba, num primeiro momento, e do duque de Ossuna, num segundo.
Só tendo em conta tais factores, será possível fazer justiça ao significado da Batalha de Castelo Rodrigo (Salgadela), uma entre as cinco grandes batalhas da Restauração, segundo o conde da Ericeira.
No ano de 1664, o Marquês de Marialva organiza as forças do Alentejo, tendo as forças portuguesas atacado Valência de Alcântara, rendendo-se muitos lugares. Na Beira, o duque de Ossuna fortifica-se perto de Aldeia do Bispo, mas na doença temporária do governador de armas do partido de Almeida, Pedro Jacques de Magalhães, forças vindas de Trás-os-Montes impedem qualquer avanço. Por sua vez, em Janeiro, Afonso Furtado de Mendonça passa o rio Tourões com 6000 infantes e 1000 cavalos; não consegue destruir o forte, mas danifica os campos de Ciudad Rodrigo.
Depois de construído o forte de Aldeia do Bispo, Ossuna destruiu a ponte de Riba Côa, que facilitava o provimento de Almeida. A ponte é reparada, tendo o governador de armas colocado no local uma atalaia.
Após a tentativa portuguesa falhada de tomar Sobradilho, já que a artilharia não chegou a tempo por dificuldades de transposição do Águeda, Ossuna responde com 5000 infantes, 70 cavalos, 9 peças de artilharia, munições e carruagens e a 6 de Julho está sobre Castelo Rodrigo, que segundo Ericeira era «praça sem mais defesa que uma muralha antiga, porém, situada em terra defensável», sendo a vila governada pelo mestre-de-campo António Freire
Ferreira Ferrão, com uma guarnição de 150 soldados. Foi valorosa a resistência dos defensores, mas necessitavam de socorros. Pediram-nos, tendo estes chegado devido à diligência de Pedro Jacques Magalhães que com 2500 infantes, 500 cavalos e 2 peças de artilharia, avança em socorro da praça sitiada, sem mantimentos, tendo os soldados que partilhar o pão que levavam.
No dizer de D. Luís de Meneses, «... Obedeceram os soldados, alegres e valorosos, em todos os séculos glorioso por esta acção, pois raramente se achará exemplo de igual constância e sofrimento...». Vindo em socorro, na manhã de 7 de Julho, encontravam-se perto das hostes castelhanas, já que aproveitaram o silêncio da noite para avançar sem serem notados. Ossuna atacava a praça, tendo o governador e seus homens resistido. Avança Pedro Jacques, antecipando-se ao reforço que o exército espanhol esperava do Comissário Geral de Cavalaria
D. João de Robles, que no dia anterior havia chegado a Ciudad Rodrigo com 300 cavalos e 1000 infantes.
Pedro Jacques exorta os seus homens a combater, lembrando os ataques constantes de Ossuna à província. Manda tocar as trombetas e caixas, som que identificou ao duque de Ossuna a presença das forças, tomam a artilharia espanhola e desbaratam as suas forças. A batalha estendeu-se depois nos campos entre o Convento de Santa Maria de Aguiar e a Mata de Lobos.

Pedro Jacques de Magalhães, tendo retirado vitorioso para Almeida, enviava à corte o seu filho Henrique, de 14 anos, que não obstante a idade, já exercitara o posto de capitão de infantaria.
A corte celebrava a vitória. O jornal Mercúrio Português dedicava ao acontecimento um número especial '... Mercurio Portuguez, com as novas do mez de julho anno 1664. Com a gloriosa & maravilhosa vietoria, que alcançou Pedro Jacques de Magalhães, Governador das armas do partido de Almeyda, contra o duque de Ossuna em Castello Rodrigo...'.
Do lado espanhol, D. Guilhermo Toribio conta-nos a retirada do Duque de Ossuna “… acosado el duque por todas partes, com el ejército em derrota, emprendió la retirada … perseguido de cerca y hostilizado constantemente…”.
A luta ficava então reduzida a pequenas escaramuças locais até à paz de 13 de Fevereiro de 1668, terminando também o reinado dramático de D. Afonso VI, a quem sucede o regente,
infante D. Pedro, ao serviço de quem estará Pedro Jacques de Magalhães, o chefe vitorioso de uma grande batalha da restauração, a única que teve lugar na Beira, numa das praças da fronteira.
No local da Salgadela, ainda hoje existe um Padrão, designado de Padrão de Pedro Jacques de Magalhães, que foi classificado como Monumento Nacional em 1910. João da Fonseca Tavares
mandou erguer em 1664 no local da batalha, em lembrança da vitória:
A paz entre Portugal e Castela foi finalmente assinada em Madrid a 5 de Janeiro de 1688 e ratificada em Lisboa a 13 de Fevereiro do mesmo ano. Instalava-se durante alguns tempos, nova época de paz, num concelho que durante 28 anos havia vivido em constante inquietude, com muitas povoações incendiadas e duas completamente destruídas, arruinando toda a vida económica da região, o que levou ao despovoamento.
Sendo uma região de fronteira, importante do ponto de vista militar, o Concelho de Castelo Rodrigo, viveu sempre em clima de desconfiança face ao exército Espanhol, referências a muitas surtidas feitas por ambos os lados. As épocas de Paz nunca eram longas.
O início do governo de D. Pedro II em 1667 e com a assinatura da paz com Espanha em 1668, a vida política interna e externa do país, manteve uma certa estabilidade que só seria destruída aquando das invasões francesas.
A nível da política externa, assinalou-se a intervenção de Portugal entre 1703 e 1713 na Guerra da Sucessão de Espanha, ao lado das várias potências europeias, contra a França e a Espanha. Ficou famosa uma incursão do exército português sob a direcção do marquês das Minas que, em 26 de Junho de 1705, conseguiu entrar em Madrid.
Castelo Rodrigo e toda a região estariam de novo envolvidos pelo espectro da guerra. A praçaforte de Castelo Rodrigo, traduzindo um clima geral de preocupação, vê aumentada a guarnição com a chegada de 30 soldados.
Mais tarde, no reinado de D. José, a situação de crispação Internacional voltaria a envolver o país e em particular as regiões fronteiriças sob o espectro da guerra. Defendeu-se a neutralidade portuguesa perante a Guerra dos Sete Anos (1756-1763), o que provocou no ano de 1762 a invasão por tropas espanholas e francesas das regiões fronteiriças, como represália
contra a recusa de D. José em integrar Portugal no «Pacto de Família» dos Bourbons. Segundo este acordo, o monarca português deveria combater contra a Inglaterra por ser casado com D.
Mariana Vitória, filha de Filipe V, rei de Espanha e da família Bourbon de França.
A França declara guerra a Portugal a 20 de Julho de 1762. Um exército composto por forças francesas e espanholas entram por Trás-os-Montes a 23 de Julho, estando sobre o Riba Côa a
11 de Agosto. Uma vez mais, as populações sofrem as pilhagens perpetradas pelas forças invasoras.
Quando em 1789 se dá em França a revolução, assiste-se por parte das monarquias europeias a uma forte reacção. A animosidade do governo português ficou patente no envio de soldados para se juntarem a tropas inglesas e espanholas na Campanha do Rossilhão contra a França,
que decorreu em 1794.
Sem qualquer vantagem para Portugal, o conflito suscitou mais tarde a reacção francesa que, aliando-se à Espanha, declarou guerra a Portugal a 27 de Fevereiro de 1801. Por três vezes é invadido Portugal, sendo que a terceira invasão no ano de 1810, chefiada por Messena, entrou no nosso território pelas terras de Riba Côa.
Milhares de vítimas, culturas e fábricas destruídas, foram os resultados que se fizeram sentir de forma dramática sobre os habitantes deste concelho e de todos os concelhos vizinhos. A violência das tropas francesas deixou profundas marcas nas freguesias do concelho.
As invasões francesas constituíram a ultima grande penetração violenta de estrangeiros no território nacional, deixando contudo profundas recordações, ainda hoje vivas na memória popular.
Poucos anos depois, Castelo Rodrigo que desde 1209 desempenhou papel fundamental na região do Riba Côa, vai sofrer rude golpe. A rainha D. Maria II atribuiu o título de vila a Figueira a 25 de Junho de 1836. A 31 de Dezembro de 1836, por decreto de Passos Manuel, é extinto o histórico concelho de Castelo Rodrigo, que é substituído pelo de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
Localizado no quadrante Nordeste do Distrito da Guarda, o concelho de Figueira é constituído por 17 freguesias, distribuídas por uma área de 508,57 km 2.
Pelas freguesias, os campos de cereais e as árvores de fruto conferem à paisagem rural uma beleza dificilmente igualável, enobrecida ainda mais, pela imponente arquitectura religiosa, com igrejas e capelas de rara beleza.

CLIMA
O clima desta região é caracterizado por pouca precipitação, devido à barreira formada pelo conjunto de serras que se estendem do litoral norte até à região do Caramulo onde é descarregada grande parte da água transportada pelas nuvens, e por grande variação das temperaturas ao longo do ano. Regra geral o Inverno é frio e pouco chuvoso e o Verão muito quente e seco.
Inverno – É uma estação do ano muito fria. Nas noites em que o céu está limpo aparecem fortes geadas, muito prejudiciais para as pequenas culturas, que cobrem os telhados por uma fina camada de gelo. Nos meses de Janeiro e Fevereiro é frequente a queda de neve. A congelação da pouca chuva e do orvalho dá origem ao denominado “sincelo”, pedaços de gelo que ficam pendentes dos telhados e das árvores.
Primavera – Os sinais do inicio da Primavera são dados por acontecimentos característicos deste concelho; o regresso das cegonhas e o florir das amendoeiras. Nesta época a precipitação aumenta consideravelmente o que torna os campos verdes e a paisagem deslumbrante.
Verão – O forte calor e a ausência de chuva desta estação pinta a paisagem com tons de amarelo dando um aspecto agreste à região. Em muitas ocasiões o calor torna-se sufocante o que dificulta ainda mais a vida dos pequenos agricultores que dependem das suas pequenas explorações para sobreviver.
Outono – É uma estação relativamente curta pois o frio chega cedo principalmente como resultado dos fortes ventos vindos do Norte; o vento “cieiro”. Aparecem também as primeiras chuvas que são o primeiro sinal para o inicio de novas culturas.
O clima agreste foi desde sempre um dos principais problemas para a fixação de população nesta região. As dificuldades em ver as culturas prosperar levaram ao abandono, cada vez em maior escala, dos campos cultivados e consequente desertificação dos solos. À população não restou outra alternativa senão abandonar as terras e migrar para o estrangeiro, para Lisboa ou para Coimbra.
O clima agreste foi desde sempre um dos principais problemas para a fixação de população nesta região. As dificuldades em ver as culturas prosperar levaram ao abandono, cada vez em maior escala, dos campos cultivados e consequente desertificação dos solos. À população não restou outra alternativa senão abandonar as terras e migrar para o estrangeiro, para Lisboa ou para Coimbra.
OS CAMINHOS DE SANTIAGO
A peregrinação a Santiago de Compostela é uma das mais tradicionais peregrinações da Europa. A passagem dos romeiros de toda a Europa por Portugal a caminho de Santiago foi muito intensa entre os séculos X e XIX, altura em que, por vários motivos, esta peregrinação caiu quase no esquecimento. Muitas das localidades do concelho eram pontos de passagem dos peregrinos que se dirigiam à Galiza.
Segundo consta no ano de 44 o rei Herodes Agripa mandou matar São Tiago, O Maior. Os seus discípulos guardaram o corpo e dirigiram-se para a Península Ibérica onde, segundo a tradição, o santo tinha pregado. Guiados por um anjo, chegaram à Galiza e ergueram uma capela onde o sepultaram.
Os séculos passaram e a Península, invadida pelos muçulmanos, foi dominada pela fé islâmica. No ano 813, o eremita Pelaio, que pregava numa pequena igreja, teve uma visão. Acompanhado pelo Bispo Teodomiro, dirigiu-se para um bosque sobre o qual brilhava, intensamente, uma estrela. Descobriu, então, a primitiva capela onde fora sepultado São Tiago.
Quando Dom Afonso II, rei das Astúrias, foi avisado, dirigiu-se para o local. Com grande pompa, os restos mortais do santo foram conduzidos para Compostela, tornando-se num dos principais centros de peregrinação do mundo cristão.
Os peregrinos tinham por costume levarem conchas presas nas capas que simbolizavam o perdão. Era tão grande o fluxo dos peregrinos, vindos de todos os pontos da Europa para Compostela que, no século XII, foi escrito o “Codex Compostellanus”. Este conjunto de 5 livros dava indicações aos peregrinos, sugerindo-lhes os vários percursos e prevenia-os contra os diversos perigos e vigarices de que poderiam ser alvo durante a sua caminhada.
Um dos caminhos ao qual a cruz situada à entrada das eiras, na freguesia de Mata de Lobos, dava acesso, sairia de Escarigo, seguia por Almofala e passava pelo Convento de Aguiar.
Na pequena aldeia raiana de Escarigo há uma rua denominada “rua da albergaria”, onde se encontra uma casa com porta e janela quinhentistas. Ai funcionava uma albergaria que dava apoio ao romeiros. Numa outra casa, perto da Igreja Matriz, existe uma janela ornada com conchas um dos símbolos dos peregrinos.
Em Almofala , solitário, mas orgulhoso da sua beleza, com o musgo a cobrir alguns pedaços do cinzento granito, ergue-se, num alto sobranceiro à freguesia, o “Cruzeiro Roquilho”, do século XVI. Ornado com motivos alusivos à peregrinação entre os quais um cordeiro e conchas esculpidas na pedra, indicava-lhes os percurso.
Passando ao lado do “Casarão da Torre”, a viagem prossegue. Lá no alto, as ruínas do Castelo Rodrigo. Na Igreja Matriz, o púlpito de granito, mostra-nos novamente a “vieira”, símbolo dos peregrinos.
A serra da Marofa era o ponto de referência para a continuação da viagem. A meio da encosta, o caminho dirigia-se para a aldeia do Colmeal seguindo por Pinhel, Trancoso, Lamego prosseguindo para Trás-os-Montes e Minho, até à Galiza.
O outro percurso vinha de Escarigo até ao Convento de Santa Maria de Aguiar, como o anterior.

O interior do Convento, amplo e fresco, reconfortava os peregrinos cansados da dura jornada dando-lhes novas forças para continuarem o seu caminho para Castelo Rodrigo. Daqui seguiam para Escalhão e continuavam até Barca d’Alva. Atravessado o rio Douro o percurso continuava por Freixo de Espada a Cinta, Miranda do Douro, Bragança, Chaves e finalmente a Galiza.

Lenda de Santa Maria de Aguiar
Reza a história que a Santa teve papel preponderante na vitória lusa ao receber no manto as balas disparadas pelos espanhóis.
A Santa começou a ser venerada há vários séculos na sequência de preciosa ajuda que teria dado às tropas portuguesas nas batalhas que travaram com os castelhanos. Assim, em 1664, nos campos que rodeiam o convento de Santa Maria de Aguiar travou-se uma grande batalha onde os espanhóis apesar de em maior número foram copiosamente derrotados e tantos os seus mortos que se passou a chamar àquela batalha, a “Batalha da Salgadela”. Diz a lenda que a Santa teve papel preponderante na vitória lusa ao receber no manto as balas disparadas pelos espanhóis, evitando assim que os portugueses fossem atingidos. «Mira que anda Santa Capeluda a aparar las balas com um azafáte» teria sido a expressão usada pelos castelhanos durante a batalha.
A lenda de amar ofa...
Zacuto, judeu fugido de Espanha, comprou o monte fronteiro a Castelo Rodrigo e aí se estabeleceu com sua filha Ofa, senhora de invulgar beleza. Corrida a notícia da sua existência, Luis, filho do fidalgo de Cinco Vilas, depressa se fez conhecer e por ela se enamorou. Quando alguém lhe perguntava "Onde vais Luís?" este respondia: "Vou amar Ofa".
Assim todos começaram a dizer "Luís foi amar Ofa". Tornados cristãos novos por imposição real, Zacuta e sua filha puderam continuar a viver no seu monte.
Ofa e Luís uniram os seus destinos no Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Aguiar. Desde essa altura que a serra passou a chamar-se Marofa, adulterando a frase dita por Luís a caminho da casa da sua amada.
